The Story Behind the Song
This song is about watching the woman I love endure a pain I cannot take away. We all grieve the loss of Collin, but there is something uniquely heartbreaking about watching a mother mourn her son. I see it in her quiet moments, her sleepless nights, and the memories she holds so tightly. I wrote this song because sometimes all I can do is hold her close, love her through the pain, and remind her of God’s promise that one day, there will be no more tears.
Lyrics
Verse 1
It’s two a.m., the house is still
Except the sound of her trying to hold back the spill
Of tears that come when the night gets long
I reach for her hand, but she’s already gone
Somewhere in her mind where our boy still stays
And I’d give anything to take that hurt away
Verse 2
By the flower bed on that old wood bench
She sits real quiet, her shoulders bent
Hands in her lap, eyes to the ground
I walk out slow, but I don’t make a sound
‘Cause sometimes the best I can do is just be near
While she talks to the wind like our boy can hear
Chorus
I see her broken heart every day
In the way she cries, in the things she don’t say
Busha’s still changing the flowers on his grave
Jaja hides his pain, but I see it just the same
And I’m holding to the promise where the tears are all undone
We all miss him… but her broken heart misses her son
Verse 3
I’ve seen her in the kitchen with her head bowed low
Holding his shirt like she just can’t let go
I’ve heard her laugh when she talks about his ways
Then go quiet ‘cause the memory fades
And I’d carry that weight if I knew how
But some things only a mother feels now
Verse 4
Jaja’s been standing by the fence line late
Kicking at dirt like he’s fighting fate
He won’t let it out, but I can read his eyes
And I see her watching, trying not to cry
We’re all stumbling through the same dark road
Trying to lay down a pain we can’t unload
Chorus
I see her broken heart every day
In the way she cries, in the things she don’t say
Busha’s still changing the flowers on his grave
Jaja hides his pain, but I see it just the same
And I’m holding to the promise where the tears are all undone
We all miss him… but her broken heart misses her son
Bridge
Revelation twenty-one, verse four
Says God will wipe away the tears forevermore
No more pain, no death, no crying there
Just his smile waiting in the Heavenly air
And I hang onto that when I can’t help her heal
‘Cause some wounds even time can’t steal
Verse 5
Some nights I pray she can sleep straight through
That the dreams don’t take her back to you
But when they do, she wakes up slow
Eyes wet, voice soft, saying “I miss him, you know?”
And I just pull her in ‘cause there’s nothing to say
Only love can carry her another day
Final Chorus
I see her broken heart every day
In the way she cries, in the things she don’t say
Busha’s still changing the flowers on his grave
Jaja hides his pain, but I see it just the same
And I’m holding to the promise where the tears are all undone
We all miss him… but her broken heart misses her son
Outro
Yeah, we all miss him…
But her broken heart… misses her son
