Joy in Truth

Did He See You Coming

The Story Behind the Song

As Collin’s father, I always wanted to protect him and make sure he never felt alone. One question has stayed with me since losing him: Did he see Jesus coming? This song is about my hope that when I couldn’t be there to hold his hand, Jesus was. And that Collin greeted Him with that big, beautiful smile I miss so much.

Lyrics

Verse 1
Lord, I’m crying out tonight, broken down on my knees
I keep seeing my boy’s smile every time I try to breathe
When You called him home, did he hear Your gentle voice?
Did he know it was his time, or did he have a choice?

Chorus
Did he see You coming? Did he feel Your warmth?
Did You comfort him, when he left this earth?
When You asked if he was ready, and You reached out Your hand
I know his big bright smile lit up
And he eagerly reached to Your hand

Verse 3
We hunted whitetail mornings, through the San Saba skies
Watched the sun set in Salado, with firelight in his eyes
Those moments carved in memory, they cut me like a knife
But Lord, I pray You showed him every joy of his young life

Chorus
Did he see You coming? Did he feel Your warmth?
Did You comfort him, when he left this earth?
When You asked if he was ready, and You reached out Your hand
I know his big bright smile lit up
And he eagerly reached to Your hand

Verse 4
Friday night under the lights, I coached him hard but proud
He gave his all for his brothers, heard his name ring out loud
He’d come home bruised and tired, but he never lost his grin
Lord, did You see that fire when You welcomed him in?

Verse 5
Sometimes he’d sit beside me, talking late into the night
Dreaming ‘bout the future, what was wrong and what was right
I still hear his laughter echo, like a song stuck in my head
Now I just whisper prayers beside his empty bed

Chorus
Did he see You coming? Did he feel Your warmth?
Did You comfort him, when he left this earth?
When You asked if he was ready, and You reached out Your hand
I know his big bright smile lit up
And he eagerly reached to Your hand

Bridge
Lord, did You take his hand gently, did You wipe away his tears?
Did You calm his every worry, did You silence all his fears?
Show him that his daddy’s love will never fade away
And promise me we’ll meet again on that bright and holy day

Verse 6
Now I walk these roads without him, but I know I’m not alone
His footprints guide me forward toward that eternal home
And when my journey’s over, Lord, just let it be
That the first face I’ll see smiling will be him waiting on me

Final Chorus
Did he see You coming? Did he feel Your warmth?
Did You comfort him, when he left this earth?
When You asked if he was ready, and You reached out Your hand
I know his big bright smile lit up
And he eagerly reached to Your hand

Outro
Did he see You coming?
Did he see You coming?
Did he see You coming?
Did he see You coming?

Yes Lord… did he see You coming?
